" About the Pee Dee "
The Pee Dee crosses both N.C. and S. C. before emptying into the Atlantic at Win Ya Bay near Charleston, S.C. There are several man made lakes on the Yadkin / Pee Dee chain, High Rock Lake being the highest and Blewett Falls Lake the lowest. Below Blewett Falls the Pee Dee runs 125+/- miles unobstructed before meeting the ocean.
I operate my Guide Service on Blewett Falls Lake and on the Pee Dee River below Blewett Falls Dam. Blewett Falls lake is small, only 2,200 acres. It is fairly shallow, has dingy water, and is full of stumps. It is stocked with largemouth bass, bream , crappie, stripers and catfish but is recognized mostly for its abundance of catfish.
The tail race waters below Blewett Falls dam are treacherous. Rocky shoals , shallow water and swift water currents make it very difficult to navigate. The water level changes constantly due to the Hydro Electric Plant releasing water. There are not any dams between Blewetts and the ocean. Saltwater fish, such as striped bass, american and hickory shad and mullet, swim up the Pee Dee in the spring to spawn. I have even caught a few small flounder in my cast net. The fishing pressure is minimum because access is so difficult. This is where I concentrate most of my efforts when fishing for the trophy blue cats.

" About My Boat "
I fish out of a 20' long, 6' wide all welded aluminum boat, powered with a 115 HP Yamaha 4 stroke jet motor. It is fully customized by myself, and designed to operate in shallow water. It is fully rigged with Lowrance electronics, GPS, and plenty of rod holders. Loaded down my boat will float in only 5" of water. My boat allows me to fish places in the river that most anglers can not even get too. Where ever the fish may be I can put you on them.

Blue Cats
We have allot of blue cats in the Pee Dee. Fishing in Blewett Falls lake you can expect to catch blue cats from 5 - 30 pounds and maybe a 40 pounder. In the tail waters below the dam the blues are bigger. You can expect to catch blues from 15 - 50 pounds, and possibly a 60 or bigger. My biggest blue weighed 74 pounds. The blues bite well all year round, day or night and the most productive months for the big ones is from Dec - June.

I do most of my flathead fishing in Blewett Falls Lake. You can expect to catch flatheads from 10 - 40 pounds and maybe a 50 or 60 pounder. My biggest flathead is 62 pounds. The flathead fishing is slower than the blue fishing but it is well worth the wait when you get one on. They fight really hard and they are by far my favorite fish to catch. The flatheads bite more consistently during the warmer months, although you may catch one any time. You can catch them during the day or night and the most productive time to fish for them is from May - Nov.

We have a good population of chanel cats in Blewett Falls lake and in the river below. They seem to bite about anytime and they will range from 5 - 15 pounds in size. They are allot of fun to catch on light tackle

Stripers or " rock fish" come up the Pee Dee from the ocean in the spring to spawn. Once they spawn they hang around in the river for a while, then work their way back down to the coast. They start showing up in March and are here until around July. The number of stripers that actually make it up this far before spawning and turning back depends on the river flow. When they are here you can expect to catch fish from 5 - 20 pounds and maybe a 25 pounder. My biggest striper weighed 26 pounds. Prime months to catch stripers are May and June.

The shad fishing is getting more popular each year, especially for fly rod anglers. They are allot of fun on ultra light tackle as well. The shad come up from the ocean to spawn in the spring, but unlike the stripers, the shad seem to find their way up regardless of the river flow. They start showing up in March and are here until they spawn and eventually die. The best time to catch them is from April - June.

American and Hickory Shad

The mullet also come up from the ocean in the spring. They start showing up about May and are here until the fall. They are catchable on ultra light tackle or a fly rod.
